In a joint statement made to People, the Blurred Lines star and his actress wife said: "We will always love each other and be best friends, however, we have mutually decided to separate at this time."
Thicke (36) and Patton (38), who met when Thicke was 14 years old and tied the knot in 2005, have three-year-old son Julian Fuego Thicke together.
Thicke – whose "twerking" performance with Miley Cyrus at last year's MTV Video Music Awards caused headlines across the globe – was last year pictured with his hand on another woman's bottom, which was captured in the reflection in a mirror.
The woman, Lana Scolaro, claimed that Thicke had kissed her at a party in New York.
She revealed: "I went to the bathroom, and when I came out he was standing there ... He turned off the lights so no one could see us, and he started making out with me. He was grabbing me. He was like, 'I want to get you into bed' ... His hands were everywhere."
In January this year, Thicke was spotted dancing closely with a mystery woman in Paris after a performance.
